London Plane Tree, "Pollarded"

Further up the street at 4062 23rd you’ll see two London plane trees that have been “pollarded”.   This is the same tree that we saw earlier on this block, but this tree has had its branches cut repetitively at the same point, causing the knobby, swollen branch ends to form.  This is done for aesthetics – “pollarding” doesn’t harm the tree, and it’s a matter of taste as to whether you like it or not!
