Juana Marcelina Leonis was the only child of Miguel and Espiritu Leonis. She was born in 1860 and named after Espiritu’s sister, Marcelina. Unlike her father, Marcelina could read and write and received a formal education. Her primary language was Spanish and she lived a privileged life, especially in comparison to other Native American children. She passed away at the young age of 20 of unknown causes.
