I was built in 1787 by Nathaniel Hubbard Dodge right here, sitting on a hillside overlooking the falls of Hampton Falls and Whittier Pond. The town of Hampton granted the falls river rights to Judge Henry Green and Abraham Perkins in 1648, provided they would build a dam and a mill to grind the town’s grist. In 1679, a sawmill was added. By 1690, this stretch along the falls had three dams and five mills and was the most industrialized area in the colonies north of New York City.
I remained in the Dodge family until 1952. A rotting old ice house on the river bank was turned into a tiny chapel. Known as The Little Gate to the City of Gladness, it was consecrated in 1932 and is recognized as the smallest Episcopal church in the world.
