Many residents think that there is no better place to view a Tred Avon River sunset than from this bench, where a small beach sits tucked between Sandaway and the Tred Avon Yacht Club. After enjoying this wonderful view, look to your left at one of Oxford’s most beautiful pieces of property. The main house of the current inn, Sandaway Suites, was built between 1873 and 1876 by wealthy Philadelphian Colonel Samuel Wetherill Senior. He purchased this exceptional piece of land for $450 and tore down several small buildings to clear his view. He also planted spectacular gardens and specimen trees that still dominate the landscape. Take a moment to appreciate the magnificent Yew and Mimosa and Weeping Beech trees in front of the Inn.
Upon Wetherill’s death the property passed to the Sinclair family who operated the residence as a very popular summer tourist hotel until 1902. A succession of owners, both private and commercial, followed for many years. In the late nineteen sixties the property was taken over by the very successful Robert Morris Inn and renamed The Annex. In 2010, owners split it away from the Inn again, renamed it and remodeled it into this beautiful beachfront hotel.
Now, let’s head back out to the corner of Morris Street facing the Robert Morris Inn.
