As you walk south on Morris Street with the Town Park on your right you will see two green benches facing The Oxford Museum across the street. On each bench is a small brass plaque: one in honor of Bill Bringman and the other in honor of his mother, affectionately known as “ Miss Myrt.”
For many years, Bill and his mother owned and operated the Bringman general store on the site now occupied by the Oxford Museum. One could find many, but not all, everyday household items. As Bill often said, “If I don’t have it, you don’t need it."—-a bit of small town Eastern Shore humor. Daily, Miss Myrt hand made her famous Neapolitan ice cream sandwiches; vanilla , chocolate and strawberry between old fashioned waffle slices. Another delicacy was her ham and cheese sandwiches. If you asked what might be on the sandwich, her raspy reply delivered with a stern look over her brass-framed glasses was, “ Ham and cheese.”
The Bringman Store was a piece of small town Eastern Shore culture cherished and missed upon it’s closing following Bill’s untimely passing and Miss Myrt’s moving to live with her out of state relatives.
