Scholes

Originally built in 1855, J W Scholes bought this property from Patrick Tierney, in 1864, for his daughter. It appears another building was located on this site prior to the present house. Scholes was a local carpenter who built many homes in Angelica. At one point for many years, it served as a nursing home/hospital. The present owners, only the third, say the room numbers still appear on the upstairs bedroom doors and the dumbwaiter still is accessible, but disconnected. This summer the porch is being renovated back to its original glory. The front door, with original doorbell still attached, contains the original etched glass window with a “girl and her dogs in a forest scene,” which is rumored to be the first owner’s daughter. Another interesting feature from when the property was a functioning farm, is the original feeding trough can be seen in the barn as well as where the hay dropped down from the loft above. The present owners also believe that the edge of the roof line became more curved when shingles were added to cover the existing gutter system. Most locals will remember the second owners, the Heaney family, who have family memorabilia on display at the Grange Hall for Heritage Days.
