South Street Bridge

According to the Angelica at 200, Angelica has had its share of flood since its founding. Of late, the one most people remember that impacted and changed Angelica forever, was the flood of 1972. The remnants of Hurricane Agnes caused damage not only in Allegany County, but along much of the Southern Tier. From the evening of June 20 through the night of the 24-25th precipitation totaled 10 to 14 inches. Angelica officially recorded a rainfall of ten and five hundredths inches with the most of four and thirty five hundredths inches recorded on June 23. All this rainfall caused serious damage to several bridges in the area, particularly on South Street. As a result, the bridge was closed by the Town Board. Shortly afterward, the bridge was sold to the Friendship Dairy (now owned by Saputo, Inc.), removed, and relocated for use at the creek behind the Dairy. On a funny note, the Booster News featured the bridge replacement as the very first Lirpa Loof.
