Ogden

Moses (Mose) Ogden, an Angelica native, was best known for his collection of natural curios which he displayed in a “wonderland” outside his home. Originally his cabin was part of a small house located on the Park Circle that was broken down and moved to make room for a mansion. According to his obituary, early in his life, he learned the wagon maker’s trade and worked 21 years for the local William Seiver Carriage and Wagon shop, eventually conducting his own shop for four years. He also served four years in the Civil War as well as an Election Inspector for three years. He received recognition for his rustic creations during the Pan American Exposition in 1901, where three of his chairs were on display in the New York State building. One prominently showcased was 8 feet high and 4 feet across and weighed about 700 pounds. It was built with 1200 pieces of fifty different kinds of wood grown in New York State, gathered while roaming over a large part of Allegany County.
