The 1914 FIAT is the American Italian car. Owning a FIAT was a sign of distinction. In 1914 a FIAT cost thousands of dollars, but a Model T cost only hundreds. Although FIAT is an Italian company, in 1910 FIAT opened a factory right here in the United States, in New York. A few years later, World War I began, and in 1915 Italy joined the Allied forces. The factory had to dedicate all of its operations to the war effort. Stringent wartime regulations eventually led to the FIAT Poughkeepsie plant closing in 1917.
