1913 Stanley Model 64

The Stanley Model 64 is one of two cars that started The Collection on Palmetto! It is a  two-seater roadster, similar to the sporty convertible cars of today. It runs on steam, like the other Stanleys. Notice the shape of the hood: It has a boiler underneath, just like the other Stanley steam cars in the museum. The Model 64 was carefully restored, just like the Model 73. It was painted in a color called Nightwatch Blue, which is very similar to the paint colors of 1913. People were still buying Stanleys in 1913, but it was becoming obvious that gas cars were the way to go, especially since the electric starter had been invented. Now to many people it seemed like waiting 45 minutes for a car to start was too long. But there were still people who were enthusiastic about the quiet operation, the power and familiarity of steam. Steam cars were very fast, too! In 1906 the Stanley Steamer "Rocket" landed a speed record with a 127 mile per hour race across Ormond Beach in Florida! Steam cars will always be a beloved part of automobile history.
