The Stanley Model 85 is a steam car: It converts steam energy (heat energy) to mechanical energy. Three big tanks hold 100 gallons of water. For every mile driven, a gallon of water is consumed, or used. How many miles could drive with 20 gallons of water? Yes, you could drive 20 miles. Steam power had been around since the 1600s, but in the 1700s a man named Joseph Cugnot developed a self-propelled vehicle that ran on steam. A century later, steam-powered carriages and tractors were in regular use, and by the late 1800s the technology was greatly improved. Then, along came two brothers who would forever change the face of steam cars: Francis Edgar and Freelan Oscar Stanley, the Stanley brothers.
