Dakota Discovery Museum Tour

Welcome to the Dakota Discovery Museum on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University. The Dakota Discovery Museum, formally The Friends of the Middle Border Museum exist to preserve and promote the heritage of the Native American and immigrant people of the middle border states, primarily from 1600 to 1939, and interpret the museums collection for the public through educational tours, permanent exhibitions, and special programming.

Our mission is to preserve the past and inform the present by uniquely, combining art, and artifact to tell the story of the region in a manner that contributes to building the future of the people of the Dakotas. Our vision is to be the preeminent regional institution to tell the story of the people of the Dakotas. Our values are to preserve, inform, and build.

Before we begin, we want to acknowledge the ground we stand on.

The Dakota Discovery Museum and Dakota Wesleyan University acknowledge that its lands encompass the historic and contemporary homeland of peoples of the Oceti Sakowin, the Seven Council Fires, the proper designation for the people referred to as the Sioux. We acknowledge that prehistoric indigenous peoples and the historic ancestors of various Great Plains tribes were the original explorers, inhabitants, and resource guardians of our region.
