Harvey Dunn was born on a homestead south of Manchester, Dakota Territory in 1884 and went to school in Esmond, South Dakota. Dunn excelled in art at preparatory school at what is known today as South Dakota State University in Brookings South Dakota. In April 1942, one of Dunn's best loved prairie paintings, Dakota Woman, was given by the artist to the Friends of the Middle Border in Mitchell, South Dakota. Mildred Soladay of Mitchell, described Dakota Woman as "a tired woman, but not a defeated woman, Her chin is up. Here is symbolized the American pioneer spirit: the courage to live each day, the cheerful endurance of hardship and privation, and a hope for a better world tomorrow."Â
