The Doc or the Watch Repair Shop

Born at Plankinton, Dakota Territory in 1886, Clarence Auld herded cattle of various owners by day. He earned a medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1910. He returned to Plankinton and lived with his wife and family in the same home for over 50 years. Doc was a man of the people and accepted sheep and other things in payment for his medical expertise.

The watch or clock repair shop was also a business common to the early towns. This display shows many tools use by those who specialized in watch and clock repair.

In the background visitors can view pictures from the Dust Bowl in South Dakota.  Many left the area as there was no way to make a living. Drought caused crops to dry up and the dust storms would black out the sky. Grasshoppers often ate all the crops that did survive. The people of the area moved west with hopes of a better life.
