Across the street from Mozart Park, at the intersection where pretty blue tables for two are set up, is Gondres Bakery. Elaborate birthday cakes are for sale, as well as empanadas and arroz con leche. Try the creamy, earthy taste of habichuelas con dulce, a Dominican sweet bean pudding. With such delicious desserts, this Latinx-owned bakery is worth a visit!
On the side of Gondres is Baker’s Dream. With its vivid sunrise, blue mountains and green fields, the mural brings you to another world - of farm animals, fruit trees, and a farmhouse before dawn. The mural was painted in 1996 by Mike Womble and the Mayor’s Mural Crew. The Mayor's Mural Crew is a Parks and Recreation program that started in 1991 as a summer initiative to cover graffiti with murals painted and designed by high school students. Since then, the program has engaged hundreds of young people and many artists to make Boston more colorful.
Once you’re done admiring the mural - and maybe grabbed a treat from Gondres Bakery - continue up Centre Street past Fernandez Barber shop until you get to Old Havana restaurant. Once there, cross the street to Pimentel Market, which is the home of our next mural.
