John Wesley Dobbs Avenue Northeast

Narrator:
John Wesley Dobbs Avenue Northeast in Atlanta is named in honor of John Wesley Dobbs, a key figure in the civil rights movement and a trailblazer for African American progress in Atlanta during the early 20th century.

John Wesley Dobbs, often called the "Mayor of Auburn Avenue," was a leader, activist, and orator who dedicated his life to fighting for racial equality and empowering the Black community in Atlanta.

Dobbs is perhaps best known for his role in championing the importance of political engagement. He believed that voting was the key to unlocking African American political and economic power. In the 1930s and 1940s, he co-founded the Atlanta Negro Voters League, working tirelessly to register Black voters despite widespread voter suppression and intimidation. His efforts were instrumental in increasing the number of Black registered voters in Atlanta, ultimately leading to greater representation in local government.

A strong advocate for education and economic empowerment, Dobbs frequently promoted the importance of education and entrepreneurship. He inspired countless individuals to strive for success and invest in their communities. Auburn Avenue, known at the time as "Sweet Auburn," became a hub of Black-owned businesses and a symbol of Black excellence in large part due to his vision and leadership.

Dobbs also mentored a generation of civil rights leaders and worked alongside prominent figures like Martin Luther King Sr. He was deeply involved in the Prince Hall Masons, a fraternal organization, where he used his position to further his advocacy for civil rights and community-building.

John Wesley Dobbs believed in the power of unity, education, and political engagement to achieve equality. Today, John Wesley Dobbs Avenue honors his tireless dedication to justice and his lasting impact on Atlanta's history and progress.
