Jesse Hill Junior Drive Southeast

Jesse Hill Jr. Drive Southeast in Atlanta is named in honor of Jesse Hill Jr., a trailblazing business leader, civil rights advocate, and healthcare pioneer who played a transformative role in Atlanta’s history.

Jesse Hill Jr. was a visionary who used his influence in business and civic life to fight for equality and improve the lives of countless people, particularly in the African American community.

He made his mark as the first Black president of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, one of the largest Black-owned businesses in the United States. Under his leadership, the company grew significantly, providing economic opportunities for African Americans and supporting the growth of Black-owned businesses across the country.

Beyond business, Jesse Hill Jr. was deeply involved in the civil rights movement. He worked alongside leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and played a key role in organizing voter registration drives, helping to register hundreds of thousands of Black voters in the South. His efforts were instrumental in breaking down barriers to political participation during a time of widespread voter suppression.

Jesse Hill Jr. also had a profound impact on healthcare and education in Atlanta. He was a founding member of the Atlanta Community School Board and a vocal advocate for desegregation in education.
