Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway Northwest

Donald Lee Hollowell was a groundbreaking civil rights attorney and activist, deeply committed to fighting racial segregation and discrimination in the South. His work paved the way for many of the freedoms we enjoy today.

Hollowell was a driving force behind the desegregation of public schools in Georgia. He represented families and students in pivotal cases that dismantled racial barriers in education. His legal expertise came to the aid of none other than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1960, after King was jailed during a sit-in protest, Hollowell was part of the legal team that helped secure his release.

And it doesn’t stop there. Hollowell also made history by challenging racial discrimination in Georgia’s prison system. He fought for the rights of African American students expelled for protesting, ensuring their voices—and their futures—were not silenced.

Beyond the courtroom, Donald Lee Hollowell broke barriers by becoming the first Black regional director of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where he championed workplace equality. He also fought for economic justice, helping African Americans overcome discriminatory practices in employment and housing.

Today, Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway stands as a living tribute to this remarkable man—a constant reminder of his tireless dedication to justice and equality.
