Camila Friedman-Gerlicz’s work makes the theoretical physical. The shape of the sculpture is determined by the mathematical formulas below. In this work, mathematical rules are translated into physical objects that allow the viewer to perceive and experience math and space physically, in relation to the body. Color demonstrates and amplifies the mathematical origin of the forms. The placement of each color on the sculpture is mathematically determined by the formulas. The paint in the plastic bags is the same material used to paint the form.
The logic of the color grid provides a key to how a flat, two-dimensional plane can be mapped onto a three-dimensional form. By making work rooted in an abstract space, Friedman-Gerlicz explores the push and pull between understanding explicitly how something exists and the mysterious, wondrous, and playful power this form holds.
