SUNBURST WITH HEADDRESS by Dale Reiger This kiln formed glass process involves making large cast glass plates and gluing them to a steel frame. The iridized glass is designed with dichroic, murrini, frit, noodles and stringers as well as bright multi colored pieces of sheet glass. It is fired twice to 1500 degrees and annealed. The corners of the piece are 1/4" stainless steel rods. The base is heavy and sturdy and contains a bracket that holds a 10 watt LED light, allowing for viewing at night. The headdress is made from painted steel or copper tubing. At night the light from the LED light shines through the top, illuminating the headdress. This piece is called Sunburst. Living on Whidbey Island we are challenged by having approx. 200 days of grey. Sun for me is a premium. When the sun hits the sculpture is becomes radiant!!
Most of Dale's kiln formed glass is a combination of fusing and casting. Most pieces require multiple firings. His table tops and clear glass sculptures are up to 3" thick. His multi colored glass houses and sculptures are thick cast, iridized plates of glass embedded with murrini or dichroic glass over a metal superstructure. These sculptures, some over 8' tall, are for indoor or outdoor use and have interior lighting. Dale has installed over fifteen pieces of public art in California, Oregon and Washington. His large studio features 4 large kilns, the biggest being capable of making glass up to 7 feet long. Dale's studio is located on Whidbey Island, WA, He lives with his wife, Teri Jo Summer-Reiger. They have family nearby and, also, a goofball dog named Sasha.
Sunburst is for sale for $5,900.
