Blacksmith Shop

The blacksmith shop was added to the Martinsburg shops in the 1930s. Sectioning off space at the back of the Frog and Switch shop. The blacksmith shop is 40 feet wide and 100 feet long. 

It contained five forges which were all connected to a Cupola Furnace. Remaining in this room are two forges, an air-operated drop hammer, a four-hole drill press, and a quenching tub.  

This space was used to forge parts for trains as well as basic tools for the site. From the mid-twentieth century until the shops were closed the blacksmith shop was used to restore old railroad spikes, track, tools, and rail anchors.
