The Leeds Tapestry is a collection of 16 big panels showing pictures of the life and history of Leeds. The panels are all made up of needlework. Does anyone know what needlework is?
Needlework is the practice of sewing – creating things with a needle and thread. There are lots of different ways you can create things with a needle and a thread, so needlework is a really interesting type of art.
The Leeds Tapestry was started by a local artist called Kate Russell, who worked along with hundreds of volunteers to create it. Kate started work on the Tapestry back in 1992, but it took her and the volunteers quite a long time to finish it. How long do you think it took them? It took 10 years – the Tapestry was finished in 2002.
Kate used lots of different needlework techniques when she was making the Tapestry, including embroidery, patchwork, rag-rugging and lots more.
Kate started the Tapestry because she wanted to show what it was like to live in Leeds, and she wanted to show all the different things that make Leeds so great.
