Based on the new intelligence he received after the November Friendly Fire incident, Forbes made the decision to attack. On November 24 the British arrived only twelve miles from the Forks of the Ohio and could hear the explosion in the distance as the French Commander Lignery blew up the Fort Duquesne and escaped on the rivers back to New France. The next day the British arrived and began erecting Fort Pitt. Forbes and Bouquet quickly returned to Philadelphia - leaving the beginnings of Fort Pitt and the highly-prized Forks of the Ohio under the command of colonial Colonel Hugh Mercer.
