BOOST Garden
The four garden beds located at spot number 14 on the map, have been designed and installed by high school students in the Bullington Onsite Occupational Student Training. This program is better known as BOOST. The students in this program are sophomores who have some learning challenges. They come to Bullington each week throughout the school year to work on the grounds as they focus on developing basic job skills that will help them get and retain a job once they graduate from high school.
The highlight of the spring semester in BOOST, is the annual garden competition among the four participating high schools. The students are given some lessons on basic garden design, and then asked to design a garden on a particular theme. They select seeds that fit their design and grow all the plants in the greenhouse. Plants and anything else brought in from outside must stick to a budget of $50. When the weather is suitable, students plant their gardens, add non-plant structures and any finishing touches they need.
The gardens are judged and the winner is announced at the year-end celebration in June. Some students are also recognized at this celebration for the exceptional work done over the course of the year.
