Welcome!

The Museum of Geology originated with a collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils donated to the School of Mines in 1885. The collection was to be used in teaching geology to students of mining and metallurgy. From those early days, the collection blossomed into a comprehensive representation of the geology of this region. Many important specimens from around the world have made their way to the Museum of Geology.

Housed on the campus of South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, the museum is situated at the transistion between two geologically-contrasting regions: the High Plains and the Black Hills.
