The king consort Fernando II of the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha dynasty, married to Queen Maria II, very connected to Sintra and its landscape, for which it had a great affection, it acquired the Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Pena in 1838 located at the top of the mountain and transformed it into a fabulous and magical palace, with architectural references of Manueline and Moorish influence.
The Pena Palace and the Park represent the ultimate exponent of Romanticism in Portugal. Its construction began in 1842 and finished 1857.
In addition, the King Artist surrounded the palace of a vast romantic park, a remarkable landscape project of transformation of a mountain without vegetation.
Taking advantage of the humid climate, it has planted trees and other plants from the four corners of the world, creating an exotic park of approximately 85 hectares with more than five hundred tree species, making the space stunning and unparalleled anywhere else.
