12 - Welcoming the Sun

On January 13th, citizens from Ilulissat gather together on the edge of the ice fjord to welcome the sun. Every year, after December 1 the sun dips below the horizon for many weeks creating a long night so the community takes great joy in seeing it again when it returns. Even though there is no sun during the long night, it is not total darkness. The moon and the snow and southern sky help to provide some light during the day.

On this day, children and staff from kindergartens and schools come out here together to welcome the sun. You must imagine that it normally freezes around minus 20 to 30 degrees Celsius at this time of the year. So the children will have warm buns and hot chocolate when they return back to Ilulissat.

The road to Ilulissat passes over the mountain along the red markers.

We now end our journey and I hope you have had a wonderful experience.

In the very final audio clip you can hear the Site Manager sharing information about the maintenance, monitoring and dissemination of the Ilulidssat Icefjord UNESCO World Heritage area.
