8 - The drop off Cliff

The drop off Cliff - or the place where you threw yourself into the sea. It sounds like a violent thing to do, but nevertheless a natural part of the life that Inuit have lived in the past. Had you become a burden to the group, by for instance disability due to old age and were no longer able to walk longer distances, then one could choose to commit suicide by throwing himself into the sea. Remember that Inuit used to be semi nomadic peoples travelling over long distances from one seasonal camp to the next. Therefore mobility was important for every single individual. From ancient times, the community and the group have been crucial - and therefore it was necessary for the individual to bow to the well-being of the group - the community before the individual.

Now let's walk up to the benches and have a rest. At stop #9 I will tell you about where all this ice comes from.
