Welcome – I can't wait to start talking about all the exciting things that are part of the journey we will have together.
On this trip, we will learn about the natural environment of the Sermermiut Valley, visit an interesting archaeological settlement and experience an incredible view of the Ilulissat Icefjord.
We begin our journey here at the Icefjord center, designed by Danish architect Dorte Mandrup. Construction of the building took two years and was inaugurated on July 3rd, 2021. Completion of this project required an investment of 153 million Danish kroner secured through a collaboration between Realdania, the Self-Government of Greenland and Avannaata Kommunia.
As you can see, we have built a wooden boardwalk - and you must never step off it during the tour. As tourism began to grow in Ilulissat at the end of the 1990s, we observed a severe wear and tear on the sparse Arctic vegetation. To minimize this damage a boardwalk was built between 2007 to 2009 and we are happy to share that local vegetation is now in the process of recovering. During the tour, you may observe some older footpaths that are still visible because of the slow growth of the vegetation. It is not permitted to step off the boardwalk and use these paths.
We encourage you to walk down the boardwalk at your own pace, enjoy the fresh air and experience the silence. In a moment I will return and tell you about the unique geology as you enter the UNESCO area by the cairn.
