THIS EXHIBITION HAS ENDED AT THIS LOCATION. Rich Soil - Wire Sculptures by Kristine Mays

Life-size sculptures adorn the grounds of the Memphis Botanic Garden. African American artist Kristine Mays breathes life into wire with her special exhibition Rich Soil, on view from May 6 - October 1, 2023. Mays breathes life into wire, transforming heavy steel wire into fascinating and moving works of art. Springing to life, 29 sculptures will surprise visitors as they dance throughout the lush areas of the Memphis Botanic Garden. “Rich Soil is dedicated to the ancestors that labored and toiled the land. Their blood, sweat and tears poured into the earth, and now their spirits have emerged through the figures I have created - rising from the soil, to be recognized, revered and embraced as they spring forth joyfully”, Mays has explained. "May they push through while at the same time mingling and dancing among the trees. Both plants and human beings come and go—reverberating within the cycles of life."
