Robert Apolinar & Elmhurst University - Captain Marvel

We chose Captain Marvel to be the subject of our superhero project because we wanted to work on a strong female character and a hero that already existed to see what we would do with it. What better than one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel universe?

We wanted to stay faithful and pay homage to the comic book look rather than our MCU movie look. While adding our own style and flavor into the mix, we challenged ourselves and made this piece digitally.

Since we had limited amount of time together, we wanted a way to collaborate all together and apart and thought digitally was the best way to do it. When coming up with the concept, knowing that it would be printed, the initial design could not be an exact die cut and would need to incorporate abstract, ambiguous shapes around the character in order to account for the printing process.

We also broke up our work into three separate areas the foreground, the mainboard, and the background. We had each one in our group take a part to work on, while two artists collaborated on the main board.

We wanted to highlight the strong heroic pose and the power that is emanating from her. We kept her color scheme within the pink, purple, and blue family with hints of yellow. Putting it all together, we had the lead on the project take the artwork and edit it to make sure it looked like one cohesive piece.

While still maintaining the integrity of what each artist worked on, they made sure that the files being sent out were ready to go to the printer. There were many challenges that we as a team had to overcome, one of them being the different pieces needed to be worked on separately and for the most part, remotely.

Also, the digital aspect, as one of the artists did not have access to certain programs, and we had to figure out how to make it work with the resource that we had. We had a lot of fun working on this piece.

It has been an honor to create and work with such talented artists. To see a project like this, from concept to reality has truly been an exciting process that we hope that you enjoy the finished piece as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Thank you.
