As one of the first large-scale layered prints, my intention was to keep a basic monochromatic palette of reds, with just touches of complimentary colors. Of course, since I love all colors, this becomes very difficult for me. As this piece progressed, I added the final layer of printing with the sinuous silver curves breaking the regularity of the red structure underneath it all. Once the printing is completed, I embellish and “fix” anything in the composition that bothers me, by hand-painting/coloring with watercolors and colored pencils. It’s done when I feel it’s all ok. The title came to me later, after thinking about the fear of communism in the last mid-century, coupled with the more current goings-on with our national politics.
