Stony Brook Fire Department

The Stony Brook Village Center was dedicated from the balcony of the Stony Brook Fire Department on July 4th 1941. If you have ever studied Stony Brook Village, you may have noticed that although the entire village is designed in Federalist style, there is one piece unlike all of the rest. The wrought iron balcony used for the dedication of the village is of New Orleans style. Why Melville incorporated this into Stony Brook Village, it is unknown, but some historic accounts suggest that it was a popular trend of socialites.

On December 7th 1941, the last tenant, D.T. Bayles Hardware Store (Where Cottontails and Lake Side Emotions Wine boutique are now), joined Harbor Crescent in Stony Brook Village Center and opened its doors. Each shop had a specialization: a butcher, a drug store, a hardware store, a liquor store, a salon, etc. Continue to the Post Office.
