VIII
If the sea went suddenly silent
would this be the end of time?
For she seems to forever
murmur or shout
whisper or pound
hiss or whistle
and even on her quietest days
when you are struck fearful
that the halt of all things
has finally arrived
just bring your ear very near
as if you want to hear her last parting words
and she will breathlessly tell you
in the little ripple of a fairy wave
that she is not done
she will measure out the few words
in a delicate lace like voice
and say
“Oh far from it my dear
just wait ‘til tomorrow.”
