Bathroom - Art and Architecture

Henry Rogers decided to include the bathroom in his new home even though city water was not yet available.  In fact, the City of Appleton was still installing its water works facility in 1882.  Rather, the Rogers system relied on gravity as well as the hard work of servants who had to pump water to cisterns located in the attic directly above this room.  Even after city water service began operation in 1883, the system did not work well for years.  The Rogers' approach had considerable merit.

Indoor bathrooms were still in their infancy when this room was created, but they were already seen as an expression of wealth.  Please notice the...

- Beautiful hand painted sink featuring a design of pansies.

- Sterling silver faucet and toothbrush holder.

- Artistic soap dish.

- and the magnificent, high style, China porcelain toilet that is embossed with daisies!

A “master suite” idea was not new either.  A doorway from the master bedroom to the bathroom can be found in about 10% of upscale Victorian house plans.
