The Meadow Stable Training Barn

When the yearling colts and fillies of Meadow Stable were about 18 months old, their grooms walked them from the Yearling Barn out to Rt. 30 and across the road  to the Training Center on the south side of the farm. The center originally originally consisted of several barns and paddocks and was circled by a mile-long training track built by a mile-long training track built built by Mr. Chenery.

From September to December, the young Thoroughbreds began to learn the fundamentals of racing under the tutelage of trainer Bob Bailes. In January they were shipped down to Florida to trainer Lucien Laurin, who woiuld complete their instruction and start them to their racing careers.

The Barn standing today is the last original barn of the training complex. In the stall on the far right, Riva Ridge, then Secretariat, first learned to accept the bridle, saddle, and a jockey on their banks. And the rest is history!

The Training Barn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.
