The Meadow Stable Barns

Welcome to the original barns of Meadow Stable, the Virginia famr that produced an American legend... Secretariat! These are the remaining barns built by Christpoher T. Chenery, the sef-made millionaire and visionary horseman who founded Meadow Stable in 1936. The barns are na example of 1930s agricultural architecture, sturdy and functional. 

The north side barns include include the Yearling Barn Annex (here), the L-shaped Yearling Barn featuring Secretariat's stall and the Farm Manager's Office, and the Stallion Barn. The barns on the south side of Rt. 30 include the original Training Barn with Secretariat's stall, and the Foaling Shed, where he was born on March 30, 1970. 

Mr. Chenery achieved great success with Meadow Stable long before Secretariat was born. His winning roster included Hill Prince, 1950 Horse of the Year and winner of the 1950 Preakness; First Landing, 1958 Champion Two-Year-Old and sire of Riva Ridge; Sir Gaylord, internationally known sire; Cicada, 1962 Kentcky Oaks winner and Champion in 1961 and 1962. Continuing her father's work, Penny Chenery bred and raced Riva Ridg, winner of the 1972 Kentucky Derby and Belmont, and Secretariat, 1973 Triple Crown champion. Hill Prince, Cicada, Riva Ridge and Secretariat all were named to the National Racing Hall of Fame. 

Over 40 years, Meadow Stable produced 41 stakes winners with earnings of more than $8.7 million.

The barns on both the north and south side of the property earned inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register in 2015.
