Hello, I'm Evan Beloni, a mechanical engineer, metal fabricator and artist based in Denver. Professionally, I have a background in aerospace and machine design and since 2017 I have been engineering and fabricating large scale public art for national artists, some of which are right here in this field. My personal art path began in the early 2000's welding scrap metal into freeform whimsical creatures. Over the past several years, I've been putting more intention into my art with more design, planning and use of specific materials.
This series Zagolith was inspired by my recent exploration in combining mild and stainless steels. I find it very intriguing that these two materials, composed mostly of iron, have a similar behavior both structurally and metallurgical yet react to the environment so differently with the addition of chromium and nickel. One material remains basically pristine indefinitely, the other corrodes forever. I have a deep appreciation for the distinct transition line between the materials.
While I appreciate curves in art, I find myself drawing art with hard edges and straight lines, both jagged and brutal yet simple and elegant. The geometries here I find interesting, particularly with the larger Zagolith because as we walk around it, the sculpture changes shape. From one angle it appears a big rectangle and from ninety degrees it appears a narrow jagged zig zag. The dynamic shadow movement throughout the day, both on the ground and on the sculpture itself, is also intriguing.
