OVERVIEW

The Travis Marina Bar at the Presidio Yacht Club, Horseshoe Cove, Fort Baker, is Sausalito’s southernmost and most historically significant stop — open to the public, tucked beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, with views across the Bay that have been unchanged for 250 years. The building dates to 1942 and the Yacht Club has operated here since 1959, making it one of the oldest continuously operating waterfront clubs in the Bay Area. No reservations, no dress code, affordable drinks, and a view that cannot be improved: this is where the Walk ends, at the precise spot where Sausalito’s story began.

HISTORY

On August 5, 1775 — 250 years before this Walk — the Spanish packet San Carlos became the first European vessel to sail through the Golden Gate and anchor in San Francisco Bay. Its pilot, José de Cañizares, spent 40 days exploring the bay in the ship's small launch, producing the first European map of these waters. On that map, the cove where the Presidio Yacht Club bar now stands was labeled 'Saucelito' — Spanish for 'little willow grove' — the name that became Sausalito. The San Carlos was damaged by head winds and spent 10 days anchored in Horseshoe Cove for repairs. When the ship finally departed, it carried the first written record of this place. The bar sits on the exact ground those Spanish sailors walked 250 years ago.
