Napa Valley Burgers (Germany)

OVERVIEW

Napa Valley Burger Company (670 Bridgeway, Sausaslito) occupies Sausalito’s oldest surviving brick building — constructed in 1885. Serving gourmet burgers built from locally sourced, sustainable ingredients alongside a curated Napa Valley wine program and a strong spirits menu, it has been a reliable anchor on the downtown waterfront since 2012. The building’s red brick walls, over 140 years old, have witnessed every chapter of Sausalito’s commercial history from this prime downtown location.

HISTORY

The building was constructed in 1885 by Jacob Schnell — a Bavarian immigrant documented as having arrived in Sausalito in the late 1860s. Schnell served as the city’s original Postmaster in 1870.  In the 189-, his building housed Fiedler’s General Store for the next 50 years. The Fiedler family — also a German immigratant to Sausalito operated the general store between 1890's into the 1940's.  The Bavarian commercial footprint on this block ran deep in every direction. Across the street was the Schnell Boarding House offering rooms to German immigrants for decades.  The building to the north, where Culitvar now stands, was an authentic German beer hall and restarant called the Arbordale built in 1908; And just South of Barrel House, was the Buffalo Hotel — built in the 1880s by J. Lowder, who sold it to build the famous Walhalla/Valhalla in 1893, a German Biergarten which still stands on 2nd street in Old Town.”  Today, we celebrate the Bavarian builders, German merchant families operating rooms for sale, food services and a beer halls: this stretch of downtown Sausalito was at one time, as German as it gets. Prost!
