Eastern Spiny Softshell Turtle

The Eastern Spiny Softshell Turtle is one of the turtle species that can be found here at Rondeau Provincial Park.

This turtle has been nicknamed the Pancake turtle due to its flat shell.

True to the name sometimes this turtle's spine can be seen through the very flexible shell.

Spotting these turtles in the wild can be very tricky, due to their love of the water.

They spend most of their time under the water in rivers and streams, inland lakes, and protected bays.

Mating season for these turtles occurs in the spring and they lay a clutch of 10-30 round eggs.

Spiny Softshells are species at risk within Ontario due to predation, trapping, and rapid shoreline development.

So it is very important for you to report the presence of turtles in the park.
