Swan River is a part of the Boyne. This small stream rises near Commons Road in Navan, flowing between estates, under Trim road, across the fields, and here it flows underneath the Dublin Road and into the beautiful Boyne. Like the Swan River, every other stream or ditch in Navan also flows into the Boyne. If you see litter in them, pick them if it’s safe to do so, or inform Meath County Council by sending a photo and coordinates of the dumping to environment@meathcoco.ie.
Leaving trees and hedgerows to grow around our streams and rivers is one of the best ways to help nature and to keep our rivers clean. Our small streams are living systems and we should ensure they are protected during future development of our town. These small streams are vital water sources for wildlife including Navan’s urban fox. Listen: what does the fox say?
HOW YOU CAN HELP: Here are six simple tips to help our rivers here in Navan!
Don’t litter: it may end up in the Boyne and flow out to sea. Plastic is very harmful to our wildlife. Use environmentally safe cleaning products: this reduces the impact of chemicals on the Boyne. Dispose of chemicals, solvents, and oils responsibly: if poured down the drain, they may end up in the Boyne. Conserve water and reduce the generation of wastewater by repairing leaks or drips in your home (a dripping tap can waste 90 litres of water a day, putting pressure on our water treatment plants). Brushing your teeth with the tap off uses 1 litre of water, compared to 6 litres per minute if the tap is left running. Collect rainwater for watering your plants.
