Roadrunners

Roadrunners are found throughout Texas in several different habitat types. All this bird needs is some bare ground with more or less scattered trees and bushes where it can walk around and catch food. The majority of the time the bird can be found running across the ground at speeds up to fifteen miles per hour, but when it is not it uses its wings to leap into the air when startled or to glide to the ground from perches. Its fitful flight is rarely long before it dives into dense brush for cover. The roadrunner will eat anything from insects to small mammals, as well as fruits, seeds, and prickly pear. Although, the Roadrunner is particularly fond of lizards and snakes.
