Trees and Plant Life

The Weatherford Trailhead lies in the far eastern edge of the Cross Timbers ecoregion. As you head west down the trail, you will see a combination of trees representing the Grand Prairie ecoregion and the Cross Timbers ecoregion. Because the trail, at this point, stretches along Town Creek and Sunshine Lake, trees and vegetation are bottomland species including Pecan, Honey Locust, American Elm, Black Willow, American Persimmon and Cottonwood. You will see Red Oak, Live Oak, Texas Ash, Buckthorn, Rough-leaf Dogwood and Sumac, which represent common plants in the Grand Prairie ecoregion. As you go west down the trail, look for the transition from Grand Prairie plants to Cross Timbers species, such as Post Oak, Blackjack Oak, as they appear and dominate the landscape.
