Butterfly Prairie and Sunflower Tunnel

As you continue on the pathway towards the main entrance, you will see a small pond surrounded by natural growth and a sunflower tunnel.

The Butterfly Garden/Prairie

Much of the western portion of the gardens has not been developed because there are plans to build a new entrance and Visitor's Center, once we have the funding. Fundraising for this project is planned to start this year. In the future, this area will be planted with prairie plants to catch stormwater run off, once the building and parking lot are developed. We will create a variety of moisture levels in this wetland area to showcase different prairie plant varieties. Previous plantings were disturbed by the installation of sewer and water systems for the Potager, the only survivors were cupflowers. Native prairie plants are slowly re-establishing in this area. Can you find any?

Check out the Sunflower Tunnel towards the entrance of the property! One of our volunteers came up with idea of this whimsical tunnel, and a local artist made the archway to accent the fun idea. This is a great display to meander through on one of your last stops of the tour.
