West View Cemetery

My name is West View Cemetery, and I have many gravestones and visitors. How did I get here? In 1861, a town committee conducted a search for a suitable location for a new public cemetery. The town could not agree on a location until finally, in 1866, two acres “on the cross road”, which is now Nason Road, was purchased, fenced, and “lotted off”.  For many years I was managed by a private group of citizens, but in 2007 the town took over my care.

Please park and walk inside.  Do you see how loved my gravestones are, and how many families of Hampton Falls are represented here? There are many family plots surrounded by concrete borders and plantings. Look at some of the older gravestones and see if you can find a carved weeping willow tree. It was a popular gravestone decoration in the 1800s and symbolized sadness, but also immortality and life after death.
There are many gravesites of notable residents to visit here.  I hope you will find Warren Brown’s gravesite and thank him for writing “the History of Hampton Falls”, for otherwise we would be without all that we know of our town!
The Charles Sanborn family plot holds the gravestone of Doctor Sanborn, who was the local country doctor for 40 years here in Hampton Falls. He went out in his buggy to make house calls with his son at his side. A tragic buggy accident killed his son, so you can see his grave here and how old he was when he died.  Dr Sanborn also lost a daughter at a young age.
Thomas and Elizabeth Brown are buried here, they were victims of an ax murder in 1868, which was a story in newspapers all over the country.  Another accidental death befell Aaron Batchelder in his father’s saw mill, Aaron is here resting in peace.
Many more gravesites to visit while you are here, some over 10 feet tall and one with a beautiful 3D rose bouquet if you can find it!  So take your time walking the dirt roads and visiting those who rest in peace here.
