Boy Scout Hut, Troop 201

As you drive farther into Teague Park, look for a rustic log cabin tucked beneath the tall pine trees.  Located at 1201 Park Lane, this is the Boy Scout Hut of Troop 201, one of the oldest continuously chartered Boy Scout troops in Texas. Founded in 1917, Troop 201 has been part of Longview for more than a century, and its members have included future Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who earned merit badges here.

The troop first met at Scoutmaster J. Pope Koon’s home on First Street, then moved to Baraca Hall at First Methodist Church in 1932. In 1941, Scoutmaster Marcus Shuttlesworth partnered with the Lions Club to build a permanent hut. With city permission, the Lions Club constructed this log cabin with a stone fireplace and shingle roof, using donated materials ranging from lumber to nails. An addition was dedicated in 1950, making the cabin the troop’s lasting home. Though it has been repaired and updated over the years, it still reflects the camaraderie, learning, and leadership that have defined Troop 201 for generations.
