Early Life

Mary was born on the 15th of January 1842. She was born in what is now called Fitzroy, Victoria but was at the time part of New South Wales. Mary was the eldest of 8 children. Her parents were Scottish and migrated to Australia. Her father at one stage studied to become a priest. One of her brothers was a priest and a sister became a nun.
