The Benz Patent Motorwagen was made in 1886. It is considered the first modern automobile. Karl Benz was a German automotive engineer. He designed the engine and received a patent for it. Patents grant inventors exclusive rights to their design, so others can't receive credit or use the design without their permission. Bertha Benz, Karl's wife, drove the car over 50 miles, quite a long distance in the days of walking or traveling by horse. More importantly, she brought awareness about the automobile. People had never seen an automobile before, nor even dreamed something like that could exist. But Karl Benz did. Karl Benz invented the first modern car, and it would forever change the way people traveled.
