Welcome to the audio tour of Stagville and Horton Grove.
Stagville and Horton Grove are both part of Historic Stagville State Historic Site. This historic site preserves part of the Bennehan and Cameron plantations, one of the largest sites of slavery in North Carolina. By 1860, over 900 people of African descent were enslaved on this plantation.
Today, Stagville is a public history site dedicated to interpreting the full history of slavery. The four houses at Horton Grove are the only preserved set of original slave quarters from this massive plantation.
This tour of Stagville reveals a powerful, intergenerational history of slavery, emancipation, and injustice. Discover stories of family, labor, freedom-seeking, and resistance, through the history of enslaved people and their descendants.
